Government Chief Whip Dara Calleary (right) arriving with new Fianna Fail Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath for a cabinet meeting by the new government at Dublin Castle yesterday.

The political machinations at the weekend have seen bookmakers shorten Dara Calleary’s odds of becoming Taoiseach by 2022

The Ballina TD was viewed by many as a potential future leader of Fianna Fáil before the shock move by Michael Martin to deny him a Senior Ministerial position.

The decision angered many and now bookmaker BoyleSports is reporting a spike in bets on the FF Deputy leader landing the top political job in the country in the next two years. The odds of Calleary usurping Micheál Martin and leading the nation have dropped from 100/1 to 33/1.

Leo Varadkar has also seen some support to take back his role before 2022. The Fine Gael leader is now 16/1 from 25/1.

The chances of the general election taking place in 2021 is 9/1 from 16/1 while 2022 is an 11/2 shot.
