The flood-prone town of Crossmolina once again finds itself on tenterhooks this afternoon with waters on the local River Deel worryingly close to the base of the Jack Garrett Bridge.

River Deel

The River Deel was worryingly close to the base of the Jack Garrett Bridge in Crossmolina this morning.

The situation marks a drastic contrast to just one week ago when the river bed was almost dry.

Heavy rains in the interim have left the river at a worryingly high level.

Local Cllr Michael Loftus told the Western People that the Deel has breached its banks slightly in outlying areas of the town.

With further rain forecast this evening and tomorrow some locals have taken the precaution of putting flood barriers up.

The situation will be monitored closely in the coming hours.

Meanwhile, the long-planned flood relief scheme for the River Deel is expected to be ready for confirmation this autumn.
