A Mayo councillor has called on the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) to carry out inspections on building sites left vacant due to the impact of Covid-19.
Castlebar Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere raised the matter following a problem in a residential area in Castlebar where contractors downed tools during lockdown and left the site unsecured.
“Given the fact that so many young people are off school at the moment these type of exposed sides are a magnet for young people to explore leaving them open to serious injuries or death,” said the Castlebar councillor.
“I have contacted the HSE and Mayo County Council on this matter and have also requested the HSA to carry out an audit on all such sites. I would also appeal to contractors to make sure their sites are secure,” added Cllr Deere.
