Mayo has been pipped by Donegal as the county to fly the most Blue Flags above its beaches this year.
An Taisce have awarded a dozen to Donegal and eleven to Mayo. In total, 80 beaches and 10 marinas have earned the highest standard for 2020, which equals the all-time record.
There was disappointment, however, for Enniscrone as it goes a sixth year without securing the Blue Flag having failed to reach the standard every year since 2015.
The purpose of the Blue Flag programme is to raise environmental awareness and promote sound environmental management of beaches, marinas and inland bathing waters, and to qualify for the flag the beaches must be found to have excellent water quality.
The Mayo beaches who have met the criteria are: Bertra, Carrowmore, Clare Island, Mulranny, Dooega, Keel, Keem, Silverstrand Dugort, Mullaghroe, Elly Bay and Ross Killala.
It represents a success for Bertra beach in particular, as the popular spot near Westport has regained the Blue Flag it lost in 2019.
Rosses Point is the only Sligo beach to feature on the list.
