Ballina residents and businesses now have an insight into what the proposed new Aldi store in the town will look like, following the release of artist’s impressions of the planned supermarket by local Cllr Mark Duffy.

The Western People revealed last week that the discount retailer was set to lodge a planning application to develop a store in Ballina.

The development would involve the demolition of three existing buildings on a site at Bury St including the derelict Deanwood Hotel and the construction of the single storey food store together with parking for 82 vehicles with access via Bury St and Teeling St.

Welcoming the first images of how the development might transform the existing site, Cllr Duffy that the proposed new store would, in addition to tackling dereliction and creating employment, help to retain business in the town centre to the benefit of existing traders in areas like O’Rahilly St.

Past experiences of out-of-town retail developments have proven to have had a devastating impact on trade in the centre of those towns, he remarked.
