A Sean-Nós singing programme is proving successful in North Mayo Gaeltacht schools.

Gaeilge Iorrais received a €10,000 grant from Ealaín na Gaeltachta, under the Scéim Tacaíochta sna hEalaíona Dúchasach don Óige. On foot of this funding, a sean-nós singing program was established in the seven primary schools in the North Mayo Gaeltacht which are participating in the Gaeltacht school recognition scheme.

Over 200 primary school students from these seven Gaeltacht schools have taken part in the program to date, which started in February 2020 under the guidance of renowned local sean-nós singer Síle Uí Mhongáin. As part of this program, the students are learning traditional Irish language songs from Mayo, as well as songs from other Gaeltacht areas, in the sean-nós style.

Gaeilge Iorrais would like to thank the teacher of this program (Síle Uí Mhongáin), as well as the local Gaeltacht schools for their support and co-operation in helping to get this new program underway. We also thank Ealaín na Gaeltachta for their funding support, as well as the other partners of this program; Údarás na Gaeltachta, an Roinn Cultúir Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta agus an Straitéis 20 Bliain don Ghaeilge.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, with government restrictions in place and school closures, Síle has compiled a short video collection of these songs to help students continue with their singing practice at home.
