There were joyous scenes in Castlebar today as 86-year old Billy Waldron was welcomed home after overcoming Covid-19.

Billy spent seven weeks in Mayo University Hospital battling the virus and family, neighbours and friends turned out to greet him

upon his return to his Greenfields residence.

Flags and bunting lined the roadway into the estate as the grandfather came home to a hero’s welcome.

Billy praised the ‘wonderful and caring’ staff of Mayo University Hospital and sent his best wishes to the patients who were on his ward. “Without the care and dedication shown to me there is no way I would be out here today,” he said.

He thanked the neigbours who came out to welcome him back to Greenfields. “I really appreciate the turn-out.”

Billy was looking forward to relaxing in his own home. “The kettle is on already. That will be number one anyway!,” he said.

“We”ll have a good strong cup of tea,” added his delighted wife Agnes.
