Cathal Freeman darting through the rain at Austin Stacks Park Pictures: Ciara Buckley

A Mayo and Tooreen club hurler has taken on board an audacious challenge comprising skill, stamina and patience in order to raise much-needed funds for two very worthy causes.

Cathal Freeman, a Nicky Rackard champion with the Green & Red in 2016, has pledged to run a marathon spanning 42km all the while soloing a sliotar to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and for the HSE to purchase PPE masks.

A 2km government restriction on exercise means that Cathal can barely make it out of his own back garden to undergo the challenge – so that is exactly where he plans to do his marathon. Cathal intends to run circles around his back garden keeping his eye on the small ball for 42km – a distance that might otherwise take him all the way from Tooreen to Ballina.

He is, first of all, looking for 2,000 retweets on the Tweet below before he sets up his fundraising page.
