A protest will take place in Westport this weekend about the running down of the services at MacBride Community Nursing Unit.

Cllr Brendan Mulroy, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, said last week that respite services at the community nursing home were suspended, along with the daycare services.

There has been long-running concerns over staff shortages at the HSE-run home and concerned Westport residents behind the ‘Save our MacBride services’ group announced the protest on Friday.

Cllr Mulroy said: “Families and people who need respite and daycare facilities are being treated disgracefully. Staffing has been highlighted as a problem but everyone knows if you offer people proper permanent contracts the jobs will be filled.

“It is time for the people of Westport to come together and protest and save this invaluable service,” the Fianna Fail councillor added.

The protest will take place at the Octagon at 2pm on Saturday.
