A second German discount store could be coming to Claremorris, with Lidl seeking planning permission for a supermarket in the town.

The supermarket giant submitted a planning application for the foodstore with off licence sales at Kilcolman Road, Clare, Claremorris on December 20 last.

The proposed single-storey storey will be 2,2678sqmetres of floor space and have a large car park Lidl has also sought permission to construct a road to the N60/Kilcolman Road to service the proposed development.

Aldi already operates a discount store in the town and if Lidl gets the go-ahead from planners Claremorris will be one of only two towns in the county with two different German discount supermarkets – the other being Castlebar.

A decision on the development is due on or before February 22.
