A man has been charged in connection with a seizure of suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of over €40,000 in Ballina.

Gardai made a seizure of suspected cannabis resin with an estimated street value of over €40,000 yesterday evening.

The find was made last Monday evening, October 28, as part of the ongoing national Operation Thor initiative that targets organised crime and drug dealing.

The seizure came about when two vehicles were stopped by members of An Garda Siochana on Clare St in Ballina.

The suspected cannabis was seized from the vehicles and four persons were arrested and brought to Ballina Garda Station where they were detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Three were subsequently released and files are being prepared in relation to each of them for DPP direction.

The fourth appeared before Judge Kevin Kilraine in Sligo District Court this morning, Wednesday, October 30, charged in relation to the possession of cannabis for sale or supply in the Ballina area.

The State applied to have the accused remanded in custody and the Judge acceded, remanding the man to the Harristown remand court sitting in Co Roscommon this Friday, November 1.

In a separate incident, gardai seized fire works with an estimated worth of €1000 when they stopped a car in the course of a number of searches that were undertaken in the Ballina area at the weekend as part of Operation Thor.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that one individual is assisting them at present with their investigation of this matter.
