A potential increase in the Local Property Tax (LPT) in Mayo has been kicked down the road.

Mayo County Council were asked to consider approving a 15 per cent increase in the LPT at today’s meeting of the local authority.

The council’s Director of Finance Peter Duggan said the increase was needed in order to provide the matched funding that would allow 50 projects costing an estimated €4.5 million to proceed.

A 15 per cent hike would see those on the lowest band (0-€100,000) pay an additional €13.50 in the year extra.

No proposal was put forward by councillors following Mr Duggan’s presentation and the rate remains unchanged for the moment.

The council has until September 30 to make a decision and a special meeting may be called in order to address the issue.
