Young people looking for student accommodation are being warned to think of their safety, before signing a lease.

This comes as a survey by the Union of Students in Ireland found that more than 21 per cent of students experienced damp living conditions.

The Oil Firing Technical Association is reminding those eager for accommodation to carry out essential checks before moving in.

It advises to ask for a BER certificate, to ensure alarms are in order and to take photographs of the property.
