No candidate has yet been elected in the Westport Local Election Area following the first count. The total poll was 8,603, with 137 invalid papers leaving a valid poll of 8,466. The quota for election was 1,694, with 4 seats to be filled in this electoral area.

Christy Hyland, an Independent candidate, is currently the front runner with 1,442 first preference votes. He was first elected to Mayo County Council in 2014, having previously served on Westport Town Council.
Following him with 1,250 votes is Peter Flynn of Fine Gael. Flynn also served on Westport Town Council and this is his first time running for the County Council.
Then, on 1,191 votes is Brendan Mulroy of Fianna Fail.Should he be elected, Mulroy will be a returning candidate.
The race for the fourth seat is a lot closer and it will be determined by how the votes transfer as the counting continues. Johno O’Malley, an Independent candidate is on 959 votes. He is followed by Chris Maxwell of Fianna Fail on 899 votes. Fine Gael’s Austin Francis O’Malley follows on 830 votes, with his party colleague Teresa McGuire on 803 votes.
Despite a surge of Green votes around the country, Cissy Nayiga could not capitalize on the ‘Green wave’ washing over electoral areas around the country. She received 365 votes.
The returning officer excluded the candidates with the lowest number of votes Shane Fitzgerald on 115 and Frank McAlonan on 82, both Independents and their votes will now be distributed.
