Mayo’s Fiona McHale and Shauna Howley have been rewarded for their efforts in helping the
University of Limerick to the O’Connor Cup title by being named to the HEC All-Stars team this
Carnacon’s McHale and Knockmore’s Howley were named at midfield and right half-forward
respectively on the team which features eight players from the victorious UL side, along with
four from defeated finalists UCD and two apiece from Giles Cup winners Ulster University
Jordanstown and Lynch Cup champions TU Dublin (DIT).
McHale and Howley are two of four survivors from the 2018 HEC All-Stars selection, alongside
UL and Cork player Eimear Scally and UUJ and Armagh’s Aimee Mackin.
McHale and Howley, along with Louisburgh’s Emma Needham, were all part of the UL team that
overcame UCD in the O’Connor Cup final at Grangegorman last weekend. UL were 2-16 to 1-10
winners over the Dublin students, for whom Knockmore’s Roisin Flynn lined out at corner-back.
It represented a seventh O’Connor Cup medal for McHale, her fifth as a player to go with the
two she has won as UL coach.
Galway duo Louise Ward (UL) and Aine McDonagh (UCD) were also named to the HEC All-
Stars team, which in total featured two players apiece from all of Mayo, Galway, Dublin, Cork,
Kerry and Waterford and one each from Derry, Tipperary and Armagh.
