The first Mayo & District Motorsport Club Loose Surface Autocross of the 2019 season took
place in the Valley on Sunday, March 10. This was the first time that the club has run an
Autocross event in March and there was a large entry list, with competitors travelling from as far
away as Kerry to check out the famous Mayo Autocross track.
The Mayo Stages Rally usually takes place on the second Sunday in March, but with no event
this year the club decided to use the 2019 date for an additional autocross event.
It was a cold and grey day with showers of hail, sleet and snow. Weather conditions seemed to
change for each of the three runs, which made it a very challenging day for the competitors on
the track and the marshals and officials who had to brave the elements.
The main battle of the day was between Peter McCullagh and Derek Mackarel. McCullagh was
ahead for the first two runs but Mackarel recovered on the third run to take the lead and the
overall win.
Nearer to home, Foxford’s Stephen Doherty took the honours for the fastest Mayo & District
Club member of the day. In Class 7, which is for fourteen to sixteen-year-olds, Mossie Costello
travelled all the way from Kerry to compete and take home first place. Hot on his heels was
Shrule native Niall Murphy, who took second place, with Ella Conway from Newport third.
Jenna McCann from Cavan took the award for the fastest female competitor of the day. The
next Autocross Event takes place on Sunday, May 12. For more information visit

A little further from home, on Saturday, March 9, club member Conor Duffy was in action co-
driving for Kenny McKinstry at the McGrady Insurance Stages Rally in Bishopscourt, Northern

Ireland. The Castlebar man guided Kenny home to seventh place overall in their Subaru S14.
